[Chubut and Río Negro 🇦🇷] The first routes traveled

This is how our dream of living while traveling began.

RP1 Rio Negro
About 200 km into the trip, a small fuel line came loose, and the entire house underneath was filled with diesel. That day, our first "magic person" appeared.

We began this lifestyle of traveling on October 18, 2024. With many plans in mind, zero expectations, and open to being surprised by the completely unknown.

We're often asked if we'd ever experienced traveling this way, and the truth is, no. Our trips had always been by car, for a set amount of time, and with stops in hotels or homes.

We'd dreamed of traveling the world since we were little, and every time our vacations ended, we were left with a "taste of not having enough." That told us something. It was hard to get back to our routine.

And finally, after a lot of personal work, both individual and family, this adventure of traveling began.

We left the city of Bahía Blanca, where we lived, in the south of the province of Buenos Aires in Argentina. We began our journey to Viedma and then traveled along Highway 1 of Río Negro, known as "The Coastal Road."

This route is approximately 210 km of gravel, from Viedma to San Antonio Este, bordering the Atlantic Ocean.

On the second day, we found ourselves on a route where no one else was passing by, and our “magic people” from the road kept appearing.

If you ever want to explore it, it's always important to check its status in advance.

The beaches or important spots you can visit along the route are:

  • El Cóndor

  • La Lobería

  • Punta Bermeja Provincial Reserve, where you can see South American sea lions.

  • Rosas Bay: when we arrived, the view captivated us.

  • Bahía Creek

  • Caleta de los Loros

  • Punta Mejillón or Pozo Salado

  • Las Conchillas

  • San Antonio Este

  • Punta Perdices, known as the "Patagonian Caribbean," isn't much of a Caribbean destination for us.

After this tour, we continued along National Route 3 toward Las Grutas.

From there, we crossed into a new province, Chubut, to reach Puerto Madryn.

We visited El Doradillo Beach, where whales can be seen from the coast. An incredible place. We didn't think we'd actually see them so close, let alone so many with their young flitting back and forth. The best time for whale watching is approximately October through December.

Las Grutas

We visited Punta Tombo to meet the Magellanic penguins, a highly recommended spot. There are approximately 3 km of walkways, and the penguins walk and stroll alongside you constantly.

If you visit, always remember to respect their natural habitat.

And finally, we immersed ourselves in Welsh culture in the villages of Gaimán and Dolavón. Beautiful villages to visit and take the opportunity to taste the famous Welsh cake.

From here, we crossed the entire province of Chubut toward Trevelin. In the next blog post, we'll tell you all about this town and its famous tulips.
